Who We Are

The American Institute of Seamanship is being built to preserve traditional maritime knowledge, develop rigorous modern training, and prepare future generations to work effectively aboard tall ships and complex sailing vessels.

A Living Maritime Institution

The American Institute of Seamanship is dedicated to the preservation of traditional seamanship through hands-on vessel work, historical research, and rigorous modern training. By bridging historical techniques with modern safety frameworks, we build practical maritime judgment and develop the skills needed to safely run sailing vessels.

Built for the Future of Sail

Our training programs focus on building command judgment, navigating wind and current systems, understanding rigging tension mechanics, and developing traditional weather routing skills. These competencies prepare the future tall-ship crew workforce and provide transferable skills that are highly valued across diverse maritime careers.

Institutional Development

AIOS is being developed in phases. Courses, publications, vessel projects, and future training infrastructure will be released as they are completed and approved.
